A developmental disorder is a psychological problem in childhood or adolescence that prevents those children or adolescents from participating normally in everyday life.
Some disorders are congenital or develop during early childhood. They have a hereditary cause or arise in response to a major event. Some developmental disabilities last throughout life, while others are only temporary in nature. Many developmental disabilities occur together or are accompanied by other problems.
A developmental disorder causes children to have more difficulty than their peers with certain activities. The consequences are manifested in various areas: physical, emotional and social. Negative reactions from the environment can add to the problems.
These developmental disabilities have a lasting impact on behaviour and social interactions and are not due to education, environment, background or trauma.
